I started this project when I began my job as a casual barista at Allpress Espresso, Sydney. I was intrigued by the capsules, wondering how their taste compares to their actual specialty counterparts (come to Sydney and find out). I struggled to get the metallic textures of the capsules to look “right” under camera movement. So, I fell back on the pure white capsules, where—surprisingly—the forms and contours, which I hadn’t anticipated, turned out quite pleasing. The simulation was my attempt to preserve the signature Allpress color theme while “spicing things up.” I wanted the ripple effect to flow through the object, echoing the sensory experience of coffee brewing.
The capsule was modeled in Houdini, starting from the simple shapes of the body and disc. Then, I added the inner and outer rims. A notable feature is the concave pattern on the top of the capsule. VEX was written to displace the main geometry from the others (logo + pattern). Lastly, UVs were applied based on seams created on the individual parts.
